Paper machine PM2 in Spremberg is one of the most modern and efficient paper mills in Europe, with an investment volume of €370 million. At full capacity, the 97,625 m² PM2 produces an additional 500,000 tons of high-quality packaging papers.
After two years of construction, the start of production at the beginning of 2021, influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic, was a challenge for all stakeholders.
The construction project consists of 2 primary buildings. The main building is the 240 m long production machine. For the construction, up to 26 m long main columns with a cross-section of 0.70 to 1.40 m are used. The total weight of the columns is around 45 tons.
The second building is the roller warehouse, which was built after completion of the main building. Peikko Deutschland GmbH supplied this imposing building project with anchor bolts, column shoes, shear connectors, and anchor plates.
Various bolted connections for precast concrete elements ensure a fast construction process and a statically safe and highly loadable supporting structure. For the most part, the columns are realized using anchor bolts and column shoes without support for the as-built condition. To stiffen the building and to optimize the design and the cross-sections, at several nodes of the column/transom connection, these are also connected to each other in a frame-like connection. For this purpose, anchor bolts and beam shoes from Peikko are used.
The client, Hamburger Containerboard GmbH, belongs to the Austrian Prinzhorn Group. With around 9,800 employees in 16 countries, this is one of the leading European companies in the recycling, paper and packaging industry. The building project was awarded to Implenia Hochbau GmbH, a leading multinational construction and real estate services provider. The structural design was carried out by the interdisciplinary engineering company bhm - Engineering & Consulting AG. The columns were manufactured and delivered by the precast concrete company Universalbeton Heringen GmbH & Co. KG.
In summary, the good cooperation between the individual companies and the Peikko components have made the construction process faster, more efficient and safer.
